Cruises can feel wonderfully simple once you are on board.
Getting the right cruise travel insurance usually means the opposite.
OGSure is designed to make that part easier to understand. Our policy includes Cruise Ship Evacuation, alongside cancellation, emergency medical expenses abroad, evacuation and repatriation, baggage, and delay-related cover.
That makes it a practical option for many travellers looking for cruise travel insurance, provided the trip fits the policy’s eligibility, age, destination, and duration rules.

What does cruise travel insurance cover?
Depending on your policy, OGSure can include cover for:
- cancellation and curtailment
- emergency medical and related expenses incurred abroad
- evacuation and repatriation
- baggage, cash, and passport issues
- travel delay, missed departure, or abandonment
- personal accident
- public liability
- hijack
- catastrophe cover
- cruise ship evacuation
- optional winter sports cover, if added
This is travel insurance designed for sudden and unforeseen events during your trip. It is not private medical insurance, and all claims are subject to the policy terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions.

What does cruise ship evacuation cover mean?
Cruise Ship Evacuation is a specific benefit within the OGSure policy.
OGSure will cover up to the policy limit per year towards the cost of your removal from a cruise ship or liner when:
- you suffer a sudden Bodily Injury or Illness and need emergency inpatient treatment that cannot be provided on board
- your evacuation is arranged and carried out by a third party, such as the coastguard, military, or similar organisation
- you receive an invoice for the cost of the evacuation
This cover is there for serious situations where you need urgent medical treatment that cannot be provided on the ship.
It does not cover every removal from a cruise ship, every medical issue at sea, or every transport arrangement. The policy exclusions still apply.
What is not covered by cruise ship evacuation?
Cruise Ship Evacuation does not cover:
- charges if you travelled against medical advice
- charges if you travelled after receiving a terminal prognosis
- removal for a medical condition that does not stop you from continuing to travel
- removal for a condition that does not need immediate emergency inpatient treatment
- costs where you have not received an invoice and have chosen to make a voluntary contribution instead
OGSure is also not liable for the failure of an organisation to provide the removal, or for delays in providing it.
That is the important bit: this benefit is for specific emergency evacuation costs, not a broad “get me off the ship for any reason” button.
Cruise travel insurance for families
A family cruise can be a brilliant way to travel, especially if you want everything in one place: accommodation, meals, entertainment, excursions, and a floating hotel that conveniently relocates overnight.
OGSure may be suitable for eligible families, provided the travellers, destination, trip length, and policy terms all fit.
Family cover can be especially useful where one trip includes different ages, different needs, and multiple moving parts, from flights and hotel stays to embarkation, shore excursions, baggage, and medical support abroad.
Before buying, make sure every traveller is correctly included and that the full trip length is covered.
Pre-existing medical conditions and cruise travel insurance
This is one of the biggest questions cruise travellers have, and rightly so.
Claims arising from pre-existing medical conditions are excluded.
OGSure uses a broad definition of pre-existing medical conditions. This includes conditions where treatment, medication, advice, or diagnosis has been sought or received within the previous five years, as well as known or foreseeable conditions.
That means it is important to read the policy carefully before buying, especially for a cruise where medical treatment at sea or evacuation arrangements may matter more than on a standard land-based trip.
For a plain-English explanation, visit our Pre-Existing Medical Conditions page.
What happens if something goes wrong on a cruise?
If you have a serious medical emergency, OGSure’s emergency assistance rules still apply.
You must contact the 24-hour Emergency Assistance Centre if you require inpatient treatment, MRI or CT scans, medical evacuation, or repatriation.
In many hospitalisation cases, direct payments can often be arranged locally. Repatriation must be approved and arranged by the emergency assistance centre.
Please keep your policy details with you while travelling, as the emergency assistance team will need your certificate information.
